Why ICANN's Approval of New gTLDs is Good For .COM

It's official, ICANN just approved the launch of new Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) -- at a cost of $185,000 per application, plus a $25,000 annual fee.

So what does this all mean for .COM? I say that this is good news, and it will only increase in value of .COM.

It's simple -- adding noise to any market will increase the value of the prime real estate.

Why We Chose the Name DomainHole

Since we first launched in Public Beta Mode, one of the most reoccurring comments we've received was about our name, DomainHole. Some people love it, some people hate it, and others just made fun of it. I briefly explained the name choice in my Domain Sherpa interview, but I wanted to elaborate here and explain why we chose to call our product DomainHole.

New Tools and Updates

We're excited to announce the launch of two new tools this week.
The Domain Alerts tool will allow you to create notifications for a domain. If the domain's WHOIS status ever changes, we'll let you know. This is especially useful if you'd like to know if/when a domain you've been watching becomes available.
The Bulk Domain CHeck tool will allow you to check the availability of multiple domains across multiple TLDs at once. This is especially useful if you have a large keyword list you've created and what to see if any domains are available for it. Best of all, there's no limit to the number of domains you want to check.

New Tool Available

We're excited to announce a new tool is available on DomainHole - the Name Generator. This tool helps you find unique, brandable Web 2.0 style domain names.

The algorithm behind the random generator is pretty cool. We scanned the english dictionary and calculated the probability of all letter combinations (at the beginning, middle, or end of the word) in all words and used that to generate pronouncable random words. We're still playing with the probability threshold to see which brings back the best words. Please check it out and let us know what you think.

We've got a list of features we're working on implementing which should address a lot of the issues people have experienced.
Here's a summary of the major changes so far...
